Day 44 and we have mobility issues

Thankfully it’s a rest day as our legs are aching so much, the first key trip out of the hotel was to top up the supply of paracetamol and ibuprofen.

It’s not just us with mobility issues though…….

Burnham standard ratio: two hospice charity shops, three mobility scooters

A quarter of residents in Burnham on Sea are 65+ years old, beating the national average by 7%. Everyone we’ve seen out has a minimum of a walking stick to help them get around. It’s like walking around a giant care home with its own beach.

Local supermarket essentials

However, the beach is not exactly the safest environment for the frail community here either.

I also foolishly and very naively tried to chase my outstanding prescription for HRT patches at two local pharmacies. I think this is the mothership for HRT prescriptions and stock shortages have obviously hit here first.

So for the rest of the day, we enjoyed the sunshine and replotted almost all of the outstanding routes we have left, checking for car dodging and cliff edge sections. Unfortunately Cornwall seems to be the mothership for cliff edges and car dodging minor roads. Stay tuned for how those go in real life.

We also went back to the Japanese restaurant we visited last night as it’s genuinely brilliant.

Not every customer there is as familiar with Japanese food as we are, which is, of course, absolutely fine. However we are wondering whether the pronunciation of chicken karaage at the table next to us as chicken karage (rhymes with Nigel Farage) is a reflection of the political leaning in Burnham on Sea. Over 20% of residents here voted for the reform party with the conservatives winning by only 14 votes over reform at the latest local election. It shows.

Mark asked AI, on balance, which was a better place to go to, Burnham on Sea or Weston Super Mare immediately north of here, also known for its tacky arcades and a lot of quicksand. AI’s genuine answer was that if we wanted an unspoilt day by the sea, skip both and head for any other seaside town nearby.

I have a sense that the visiting dog in our pub/hotel concurs…..

Distance – back in time, infinite. Forward to our future aged selves scooting around Somerset, perhaps not as far as we like to think.
